Solar subscription

Solar finance glossary · South Africa

Quick definition

A solar subscription is a monthly service plan under which a customer pays a recurring fee for the use of a solar system, with equipment, installation, monitoring, maintenance and often insurance bundled into a single charge for the life of the agreement.

It is closely related to an operating lease but is marketed and structured as a service rather than a hire of equipment. Subscriptions became popular in South Africa during the loadshedding years of 2022 to 2024 because they let households and small businesses get backup power without a deposit or a large upfront payment. Contracts are typically month-to-month or short fixed terms with a notice period and, in some cases, an option to buy the system later.

The trade-off is total cost: over a long horizon a subscription usually costs more than outright purchase, in exchange for flexibility and a single point of responsibility for performance. Credit checks are generally lighter than for asset finance.
